Millions of people in the UK rely on careline pendants, door entry systems, burglar alarms and medical alert devices that use the phone line to call for help. As the copper network is switched off, all of these devices need to be assessed — some will work fine on digital lines, others will not.
The first thing to do is contact the supplier of each device and ask whether it is digital-ready or has been tested on VoIP lines. Many modern devices already work over IP. Older analogue alarm systems — particularly those using a standard PSTN modem to dial an alarm receiving centre — are less likely to work without an upgrade.
What about 999 calls from a careline pendant?
Careline systems that dial 999 directly should work over digital lines, but the provider of the careline needs to confirm this for your specific device. Do not assume — ask explicitly. Some providers are offering free device upgrades ahead of the 2027 deadline; it is worth checking whether yours does.
If you are helping an elderly relative prepare, the most important step is to contact their careline provider now, while there is still time to arrange upgrades or replacements before the deadline. Our customer support team can also advise on compatibility if you are planning to move the device to a Virtual Voice line.
